Elsø Church
A Romanesque church with traces of the past.

Elsø church – a small Romanesque church with traces of the past
Elsø church is one of the more modest, yet particularly atmospheric churches on Mors. There is nothing showy here – instead you are met by a calm and simplicity that makes room to feel the quiet presence of history.
A church with deep roots
The church is built in the Romanesque style and bears witness to a time when stone, faith and craftsmanship merged into solid buildings that still stand today. The tower, however, is of more recent date, having been built in 1956 after the earlier late Gothic tower collapsed in 1704.
The porch dates from the 18th century and adds yet another layer to the church's long history.
Details that speak
Above the chancel arch you'll find a distinctive granite stone with five carved holes. This is most likely a so-called lamp stone, where an oil lamp once rested – a small but fascinating trace of the church's earlier use.
The altar table is built against the east wall of the chancel and consists of a granite slab made up of three parts. The central section contains an empty saint's tomb, bearing witness to medieval religious practice.
A quiet experience
Elsø church is a place where you don't necessarily stay long – yet you take something away with you. It is the silence, the details and the sense of time that make the visit special.
