Bjergby Kirke – a Romanesque church by the Limfjord with an unusual floor plan
In the open landscape by the Limfjord, Bjergby Kirke stands as a quiet reminder of another age. Here you'll find a Romanesque church that stands out for its unusual layout and its many historical layers.
A church without a chancel – and with roots in the Middle Ages
Bjergby Kirke dates from the great church-building era of the 12th and 13th centuries and consists of a Romanesque apse and nave – without the traditional chancel. This distinctive floor plan gives the church a characteristic and singular appearance.
In the 15th century the church was remodelled into a single unified space. From this period come the broad Gothic windows with flat arches, which still define the interior today.
Details that speak – from the Renaissance to the Middle Ages
Inside you'll find a pulpit and altarpiece in a rural Renaissance style from around 1625, adding warmth and craftsmanship to the space.
On the north wall of the nave hangs a late Gothic chancel arch crucifix, creating a powerful visual focal point.
The church pews from 1648 bear witness to a long life of worship, and against the south wall outside lies a large Romanesque gravestone inscribed Tufo Saderos (Tue Præst) – a tangible trace from the past.
