Ørding Church

Ørding Kirke from the 12th century – raw granite, Romanesque traces and quiet stories by the Limfjord

In the heart of Ørding stands Ørding Kirke as the town's oldest building – erected in the 12th century with a nave, chancel and apse.

The raw granite ashlar blocks and whitewashed field stones still bear witness to the original construction.

A medieval church with visible traces of its origins

Ørding Kirke is located in Ørding on Mors and is built in the Romanesque style. The church consists of a nave, chancel and apse from the 12th century.

The east and north windows date from the time of construction.

The north wall of the nave contains two Romanesque windows, enlarged at a later date.

The south door is in use, while the north door has been blocked.

Granite, monk bricks and layers of history

The tower was built in the 15th century. The lower section uses granite ashlar blocks from a demolished west gable, while the upper parts are in monk bricks.

The church is today whitewashed, but the 2008 restoration revealed the use of red monk bricks.

The porch dates from 1926.

Furnishings with roots in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

The font dates from the time the church was built and is carved from a single stone. The altar table is constructed from granite ashlar blocks.

In 1681 a strip of parchment was found in a reliquary with a reference to the saint Ursula.

The church has no altarpiece, but has a fresco and glass mosaic from 1929 by J. Th. Skovgaard. The pulpit dates from 1654 in the Renaissance style, and the confessional from the 17th century.

Details that give the church its character

A model ship, Barken Ursula, hangs in the church and was donated in 1971.

The church bell dates from 1850 and was recast in 1891.

The churchyard is enclosed by a stone wall.
