From Romanesque foundations to a Gothic tower

Øster Assels Kirke consists of a medieval nave, chancel and apse, while the tower was built in the 15th century. The lower section of the tower is built from ashlar blocks, while the upper parts are of brick – a clear marking of the transition between building styles.

The apse was restored in 1883, and today only the chancel's north window remains original. The tower previously had a pyramidal roof, giving an interesting glimpse into the changing expression of the church over time.

Alterations and traces of earlier functions

On the north side of the church there was once a late Gothic sacristy, later used as a chapel. After its demolition, a porch was built at the south door, which has since also disappeared. Today the tower room serves as the porch.

Access to the tower is via an external staircase, as the entire tower room has been incorporated into the porch.

Above the apex of the apse roof sits a distinctive stone that either served as a holy water stoup or as a drain for consecrated water – a detail that invites curiosity.

Furnishings with stories from several centuries

The altar table is Romanesque, built from ashlar blocks with a preserved (empty) saint's tomb. The table is covered with a wooden board upholstered in red plush.

The altarpiece 'The Prodigal Son' was painted by Troels Trier and installed in 1924. The earlier altarpiece from around 1600 now hangs on the south wall of the nave, with a painting of the Resurrection of Christ by Milton Jensen from 1885.

The altar candlesticks date from around 1600.

The baptismal dish from approximately 1575 was made in Nuremberg and bears both the motif of the German imperial eagle and the Habsburg coat of arms, as well as the inscription 'Got sei mit uns'.

The cabinet-style priest's chair from 1708 was donated by Madamme Maren Vognsdatter and bears witness to local generosity and involvement.

In the chancel's north window there is a stained glass painting of the angel at the Annunciation.

The crucifixion group in the nave dates from around 1525, while the cross itself is of more recent origin. The figure was previously placed on the triumphal wall.

The church ship 'Fortuna', a two-masted square-rigged schooner, was made by Engbert Jeppesen around 1972 and adds a maritime character to the church interior.
