Solbjerg Kirke – a church on the hilltop with views and historical weight

Solbjerg Kirke stands high in the landscape on a hilltop with a wide and open view across Mors.

Even on arrival you sense the particular calm and sense of perspective the place offers – as though the church has always had its natural place right here.

From Romanesque foundations to a Gothic tower

The church was built in the 12th–13th century and consists of a Romanesque chancel and nave, which form the solid and simple basic structure.

The tower from the 15th century was added later, lending the building a clear historical layer and a prominent silhouette in the landscape.

A church interior with character

Inside the church you are met by a space in which both older and more recent elements work together. The altar is made of wood in more recent times, while the altarpiece from around 1640 stands as an impressive piece of craftsmanship from an earlier period.

The crucifixion painting is the original and lends the church interior a particular weight. Also note the unusual altar canopy, which gives the space a distinctive character and makes the experience even more special.

Details from more recent times

The baptismal dish and jug in brass were created by the artist Ebbe Hjorth in 1997.

They represent a modern layer in the church's history and show how the church continues to develop and receive new additions.
